To the Other Side, a concert duet for Bb clarinet and bass clarinet, was the third prize winner of the inaugural International Clarinet Association Low Clarinet Festival Composition Competition in 2023.

This piece signifies a critical life shift. When we face a monumental challenge, we are given the opportunity to grow, which is one of the most sacred rights of humanity. The first movement, “Whole Self In,” is a quirky dance built on the E whole tone scale that represents going through life on autopilot with a determination to face the storm. In the second movement, “Tension,” we hit a wall and become disoriented. We feel lost within jarring phrases as E and F whole tone centers meander in dissonance before aligning at the end, leading directly into the third movement. In “Making it Count,” the players must literally count while navigating fun, punchy rhythms notated in various meters. The piece resolves on the F whole tone scale as clarity is achieved and a new life trajectory is established.

The first and third movements were written initially as études that can be found in Finger Fitness Études Book 3 (releasing summer 2023). Realizing these études as duets was a treat!

Michael Lowenstern has integrated the piece into his innovative Score Reader software (for mac users) where you can play along with each part and change tempi to suit your needs. Access to this tool is included with your purchase. For everyone, no matter what kind of computer you use, MP3s of each part with click tracks are included for practicing purposes. Immediately following your purchase, you will receive an automatic email to access the MP3 downloads. Score Reader tools will be personally sent by me 12-24 hours after your purchase. If you have any questions, please contact me.
