Updates and Corrections
m. 31 – missing a crescendo
NEW version for low C instruments now available with your download.
These corrections and updates have been made for versions downloaded on 1-8-21 or later.
Finger Fitness Études for Clarinet and Auxiliary Clarinets, Book 1
Updates and Corrections
The 2nd edition already reflects these updates and corrections (see further below for 3rd edition information – which is the most current edition):
Inside Cover Page: Connie Rhoades has been updated to Dr. Connie Rhoades
Table of Contents: Appendix B no longer contains a bass clarinet fingering chart. While the fingering chart text still appears in the table of contents, which will be corrected in next printing, the fingering chart and ALL low fingering suggestions have been removed from the Low C Bass Clarinet section since Low C instruments vary so much with key systems. The table of contents will be updated for so some 2nd editions will reflect this update but since this it such a small correction, it will still officially be the 2nd edition.
p. 4 now reads: Mysteriously – in slow 2, with a smooth and sultry character
p. 5 now reads: March – with great purpose
p. 9 the first printing had ñ in Habanera which is incorrect and now it reads as it should: Habanera
p. 27 now reads: Dreamily – in slow 2, with expressive rubato
p. 35 Zack Casper’s name was misspelled and now reads as Zach Casper
p. 46 now reads: March – with great purpose
p. 65 is the new page number for the Glossary. This may be slightly different than some of the digital versions that went out.
p. 15 The slur in m. 32 should continue all the way to the downbeat of m. 33 (matching other instances of the same gesture).
*Digital copies starting from 1-28-21 contain the updates above.
*****FINGER FITNESS ETUDES, Book 1 – 3rd Edition (March 2021)
This newest edition will reflect the updates listed above as well as the following:
All wording to do with “bass clarinet” has been changed to “low clarinet” since many instruments in the clarinet family, other than bass clarinets, have lower ranges.
Andrew Simon has been added to my list of readers. He was instrumental in connecting me with Michele Zukovsky (primary editor) and provided invaluable ideas and insight for organizational improvement for this edition.
Table of Contents: “Into the Wind” and “The Great Divide” have swapped positions in the book. Additionally, a short paragraph has been added to explain how a few of the etudes were inspired by other music or films, etc. You can view and print the updated table of contents HERE.
Part 1, 2 and 3 (p. iv, 17 and 41): These mini contents pages have been redone and are now visually cleaner.
Etudes in Part 1 and Part 2 that have low clarinet versions now include a note to go to the alternate page for the low clarinet version.
Appendix A and B: I found a few drills with errors and a couple of drills were missing or in the wrong order (whoops). Mainly, these appendixes now have the added feature of directing you to the corresponding etude that matches the drill. This allows a little more versatility with the book. You can view and print these updates HERE at no cost.
Specific Etude Changes/Corrections:
p. 1, m. 38, flat symbol added above the trilled A. This is a courtesy because I know it can be confusing. Please remember that all accidentals that you find are only to be applied to the octave indicated. Assume this rule with pretty much anything that I write.
p. 9, tenutos have been added to the quarter notes in m. 2-4 and the breath mark that WAS in m. 15 is now in m. 14.
p. 12, directions at the bottom regarding the pinky switch have changed to read, “Use alt. Ab/Eb key if available or do a quick pinky slide or switch as marked.”
p. 25, the fork fingering for low B accidentally had the register key filled in as if to play clarion F#. This fingering has been corrected.
p. 27, the breath mark in m. 42 is now in parentheses. It is ideal to continue to the fermata without the break but it would still be my first choice if I had to take a breath in that phrase.
p. 36/37, these etudes have swapped positions so “Into the Wind” is now p. 36 and “The Great Divide” is now p. 37. On “Into the Wind” the directive text now reads, “Brisk waltz – in 1”
p. 38, directive text now reads, “Largo – in slow 2, with great sadness.” The breath mark in m. 36 has been put into parentheses and a NEW breath mark in parentheses has been added to m. 62. These kinds of things bug me and I may change it again. Feel free to breathe where it feels natural as long as it fits the music.
p. 43, directive text now reads, “Brisk waltz – in 1”
p. 46, the 2nd finger drill has been changed to reflect the REAL challenge in this low version (all thanks goes to Michael Lowenstern for feedback on this one).
p. 49, instructive text at the bottom now reads, “Proper left hand position with minimal movement is critical for executing the throat F# – G – Ab combinations.”
*****FINGER FITNESS ETUDES, Book 1, 3rd Edition – ERRORS FOUND
p. 12, “Heroina,” the asterisk in m. 56 should be over the G# instead of the A. This has been corrected in digital orders received 3-19-21 or later and will be corrected in future printings of the 3rd edition print books.
p. 15, in the text box, it should read, “See p. 49 for low C version!” This has been corrected already for digital versions but the first round of printed 3rd edition books will contain this error. I am debating on how I might address it… white out, a sticker? I’m so tired… 😛
p. 37, “The Great Divide,” the 2nd B fingering shown at the bottom of the page should be the left B lever (the book shows Left C). This has been corrected in digital orders received 3-19-21 or later and will be corrected in future printings of the 3rd edition print books.
p. 49, “Cossack Caper” (low version), in m. 41, mp is missing from beat 4. This has been corrected in digital orders received on 4-11-21 or later and will be corrected in future printings, etc.
****FINGER FITNESS ETUDES, Book 1, 3rd Edition – OCTOBER 2021 Printing
This printing addressed all errors listed above along with the following mostly “cosmetic” updates:
1. ASCAP information added
2. New back cover with QR code
3. Oxford commas added
4. Low C boxes now have space between p. and #
5. Appendix A and B now have space between p. and #
6. Overall visual cleanup of note spacing, dynamics, text and breath mark placement
7. “First Flight” – optional breath added in m. 39
8. “Desert Impasse” – one tenuto was missing from the half note B-natural in m. 36 (MANY tenutos were missing in the low C version – compare to original then add the one in m. 36 mentioned here)
9. “May the Forks Be with You” – m. 28, changed from dotted half note and quarter rest to a whole note with a breath mark, AND extended crescendo to peak at the beginning of m. 29.
10. “Rev it Up” – In the lightly section, staccato indications were added to all “lone” 8th notes, also in m. 26, 30, and 42. In m. 11, beat three, a tenuto was added.
11. “Sunny Days” – In footnote, updated “break” language to “connecting registers”
12. “Happy Little Bluebirds” – m. 27 and 29, courtesy accidentals added

Updates and Corrections
First print run (August 2021)
Luckily found before any orders were placed, two errors have been discovered and addressed as follows:
p. 37 “Simon Says” – an extra housetop accent appears above the second to last note of measure 38. This is already corrected for ALL digital versions. Print versions will have a corrective sticker neatly covering the error. This error will be corrected on all future printings.
p. 40-41 “Big City Life” – The articulation pattern at the end of measure 36 is incorrect. It should match the articulation pattern in measure 35. This is already corrected for ALL digital versions. Anyone receiving a print copy from the first print run will need to correct the error by hand, and it will be corrected in all future printings.
Other Errors Found:
p. 17 “Memento” – Steve’s last name was spelled incorrectly. I should have trusted my gut on that one. His name is spelled Steve Snider. Please correct this error by hand in any print books from the first run. Future printings will reflect this correction. Digital orders from 8-13-21 have been corrected.
p. 3 “My Oblivion” – Footnote – The natural sign meant for the B is over too far to the right and covers the first letter of the next word. Future printings will reflect this correction. Digital orders from 9-28-21 have been corrected.
Second Print Run (November 2021)
The errors listed above have been corrected along with the following “cosmetic” changes:
1. ASCAP information added
2. Oxford commas added
3. Low C boxes now have space between p. and #
4. Appendix A and B now have space between p. and #
5. “Break” language changed to “connecting registers” on “Cosmopolitan” and “Balancing Act”
June 2022 Printing/Digital Version
Just one small printing error and a change to one of the low C studies:
p. 27 “Joker’s March” – measure 1, the second to last note (low A) was printed at 90% (appearing smaller) in previous editions
p. 49 “Quartz Mountain” (low C version) – final two measures altered to end on low D.
November 2022 – New Mistake Found
(This will be corrected in future printings and already corrected in digital copies. Some print copies will be hand-corrected).
p. 29 (and p. 59 for Low Eb version) “Stormy Seas” – Cadenza: the A# at the beginning of the cadenza is the only A#. All other A’s in the measure should be A-naturals.
February 2023 – Omission Found
(This will be corrected in future printings and already corrected in digital copies. Be sure to add to your print copy).
p. 26 (and p. 58 for Low C version) “Mixed Bag” – dynamic omission – Measure 35 should have a crescendo and measure 36 should have a decrescendo (mimicking m. 3-4).
Late April 2024 – Beaming Error Found
(This will be corrected in future printings and already corrected in digital copies. Be sure to add to your print copy).
p. 9 “June Bug” – measure 5 should have a beam connecting the notes in beat 4 (as seen in all other instances of this rhythm).
Cortejo de Aves
m. 71 is missing a natural sign on the 2nd grace note in the measure. This has been corrected on digital orders from October 12, 2021 and on and will be corrected in future printings.

Small error found in first printing:
p. 7 #7: the original measure number is visible behind the #7. This has been corrected for the digital version and will be corrected in all future print copies.
Omission Found:
p. 7 #7: In the 4th measure, the 2nd to last note is missing a staccato marking. This has been corrected in the digital version (March 2023) and will be corrected in future printings.
New Omission Found (8-2024)
p. 17 #7: In the 4th measure, the 2nd to last note should be an A#. Digital versions beginning August 10, 2024 have been corrected and it will be corrected in the next printing (also August of 2024). Otherwise, please mark this in your books.
