Why request a newly commissioned work?
1. Simply to support living composers and new music.
2. Perhaps you (or your ensemble) are celebrating a milestone.
3. For a specific event or conference.
4. For the opening of a new venue, concert hall, art gallery, neighborhood coffee shop, etc.
4. To fulfill a need that you feel might be missing in the current repertoire.
5. To create a piece of music specifically tailored to you (or your ensemble) that compliments your strengths.

How does the collaboration work?
The first part involves gathering lots of information (mainly from the initial request for the commission - see below). The more details you provide, the easier it is for me to find the right kind of inspiration. I will get to work and share as much or as little as you would like along the way. As I share, we can make adjustments easily during the process. The more hands off you are, the more of a surprise the finished product will be. It really depends on what you prefer.

Is commissioning new music affordable?
Well, that all depends on WHO is composing the music, right? Award-winning, famous composers will likely be out of reach for many musicians, but there are plenty of composers with affordable fees (see my rates below). Once we have a solid idea of what kind of piece you want and how long it will be, I can provide a general estimate. A deposit will be made before the project begins (usually 25% of the estimated total), and then the remainder is due upon delivery. If you would like to set up a payment plan, that can be arranged.

How do I get started?
The process begins with initial communication and request for the commission:

Please include as many details as possible with your request:

1. Instrumentation
2. Single or multi-movement
3. Style or topic of inspiration
4. Difficulty level
5. Length (especially include length constraints if applicable - ie. no longer than 7 minutes, etc).
6. Ideal timeline for final delivery
7. Key signature or specific meter requests, etc.

If the project will move forward, an agreement will be written that both the composer and commissioner will review and sign. A deposit will be required (usually 25% of the estimated total) and the remainder of the fee will be due upon final delivery of the music.

The following outlines my typical commissioning fees. Exact fees will be calculated for each individual project. These estimates simply give you and idea of the typical costs associated with a new commission with me. All commissions have a 3 minute minimum. Please note that the difficulty level is the primary factor that impacts the per minute range:

Clarinet Alone - $75-$100 per minute
Clarinet Duo - $100-$150 per minute
Clarinet Trio - $150-$200 per minute
Clarinet Quartet - $250-$300 per minute

For new arrangements of my own existing works, the fee is $50 per hour.
